District Care for Creation Sunday

Sunday 29th January
During our Autumn Synod we explored ways in which we can live our call to be an Eco District. One of those commitments was enabling a District wide worship service. Although there are many opportunities to focus on care of creation at various Sundays of the year we hope to worship in one spirit and body as a District and worship service has been prepared complete with sermon by Revd. Nick Read as well hymn suggestions, readings and prayers.

Click here for service liturgy and Sermon.

We would love to see and hear how you have shared your time together and if you wish, post on this Facebook Page https://www.facebook.com/groups/wolverhamptonandshrewsburycareofcreation/

Bewdley Music Concerts - world premiere

Bewdley Methodist Church, High Street, Bewdley DY12 2DH
Church concerts are back  – with  a world premiere

Bewdley Methodist Church is re-launching its popular Music in the Chapel concerts with a piano recital – featuring the world premiere of a work composed especially for the church.

Fantasia on ‘O For a Thousand Tongues to Sing’ by Tony Bridgewater was commissioned for the church’s 225th anniversary in 2020 but pandemic lockdowns led to all the concerts being postponed.

Concert organiser Neil Sollom said: “Tony has composed something really special, based on four tunes associated with the well-known hymn written by Charles Wesley.  The lockdowns and uncertainty over Covid meant we had to suspend our Saturday afternoon concerts but this is a great way to re-launch them.  Tony’s last recital for us in 2019 was a sell-out and we’re sure that hearing him play ‘our’ composition will be equally popular.”

Mr Bridgewater (photo attached) is a freelance musician and composer, conductor of the Wyre Forest Symphony Orchestra and principal accompanist of Kidderminster Male Choir. He will perform his fantasia in the concert on Saturday 18 March 2023, together with works by Bach and Schubert.

The concert on 18 March starts at 2.30pm and tickets (£10 including light refreshments) should be reserved in advance by contacting Neil Sollom Tel 07780 650491, email neilsollom@btinternet.com or Mike Dernie Tel 01299 400284, email mikedernie@aol.com.

All funds raised will go to help fund the church's ongoing commitment to its mission and outreach activities and are intended to increase the church's involvement with the local community.  The church is grateful to members Pat and Harry Lewis for sponsoring Mr Bridgewater’s recital.

Plans for future concerts include an organ recital, a brass ensemble, and singers.

For more information contact Neil Sollom Tel 07780 650491,  email: neilsollom@btinternet.com

#ThereisRoom...Could you host a Ukrainian person or family in your home?

As Russia’s war in Ukraine evolves, its impact on the people of Ukraine is being felt in new ways. Attacks on civilian centres and shutdown of key infrastructure will force many to flee as winter sets in. Thousands are still hoping to come to the UK, but suitable hosts are in short supply.
The Methodist Church is partnering with Citizens UK’s "Communities for Ukraine" Scheme, which helps community groups to welcome and support refugees from Ukraine. This means that as a host, you would have more wraparound support for both you and your guest(s), being supported every step of the way.  Matt Caeser has joined the Connexional Team to in order to support the scheme and we’re grateful to our Safeguarding team, Sue and Kay, for offering the local support which means that potential hosts from this District can now apply through the scheme.
If this is something you would like to explore, even tentatively, then please find more information and apply here: https://www.methodist.org.uk/our-work/our-work-in-britain/social-justice/methodists-for-ukraine-apply-to-host-a-ukrainian-family/

The Strippings of Jesus - Wesley House Public Lecture

The Strippings of Jesus: Asking the Right Questions. A FREE public lecture by Prof. David Tombs at Wesley House Cambridge and online.
Monday 23 January 2023, 4pm-6pm
All four gospels record that Jesus was stripped of his clothes at the cross. Mark 15:15-20 and Matthew 27:26-31 attest to an additional series of strippings as part of the mockery in the praetorium. Asking the right questions about the strippings can help churches to think more deeply about the prevalence of sexual violence both past and present. How are these forced strippings of Jesus to be understood? What was their purpose at the time? How might they help churches address the silences and stigmas around sexual violence in contemporary times? This public lecture will examine the meaning that stripping a prisoner conveyed in the ancient world. It draws on the recently published The Crucifixion of Jesus: Torture, Sexual Abuse, and the Scandal of the Cross (Routledge, 2023, taylorfrancis.com) to show why this part of the crucifixion narrative deserves more attention.
